SAM Magazine—Schladming, Austria, Feb. 5, 2013—U.S. ski racing champion Lindsey Vonn fell hard during the women’s super G event at the World Championships earlier today and was flown by helicopter to a hospital. According to U.S. Ski Team medical director Kyle Wilkens, Vonn suffered a torn ACL and MCL in her right knee and a lateral tibial plateau fracture. She will be out for the remainder of this season but may heal in time to compete during the 2013-14 World Cup season and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, according to her medical team.

Vonn had posted the fastest first interval and was having a strong run when she went down off a jump midway down the course. One report said that Vonn lost her balance on upon landing, lost her ski, and slid into a gate before coming to a stop.

Weather may have been a factor. The start of the race was postponed several times over three and a half hours due to fog, and went into a 15-minute hold after the first eight racers had completed their runs. Vonn ran 19th.

World Cup points leader and two-time Olympic silver medalist Tina Maze of Slovenia won the race, with American Julia Mancuso in third.
