Ski/Snowboard Media Sees Wave Of Mergers

  • Push to The Latest: No
SAM Magazine-Boulder, Colo., July 31, 2008-Two mergers have changed the face of snowsports media this week. Storm Mountain Publishing (SMP), the owners of Snowboard and Freeskier Magazines have announced that the company has acquired the assets, including websites and subscribers of recently defunct Future Snowboarding magazine. And, Ski Press has announced a new multi-platform partnership with SnoCountry Mountain Reports.

According to SMP, the acquisition includes the website futuresnowboarding.com and the women's snowboarding magazine The Drift. Future Snowboarding magazine ceased publication in June, but the magazine's subscriptions have been folded into Snowboard magazine's subscriber file. According to SMP, the move nearly doubles Snowboard's subscription base. "Uniting the readership under one magazine will create a more efficient vehicle for the industry's advertisers, which is paramount in this tightening economy" said SMP President Bradford Fayfield.

SMP will also maintain the futuresnowboarding.com website, building upon the already strong community that uses the site. According to SMP, during peak periods last winter, futuresnowboarding.com received more than 400,000 unique visitors per month.

The web and multi-media platforms will also play a major role in the partnership between Ski Press and SnoCountry Mountain Reports. According to sources at Ski Press, the new media package will unite internet, print and radio for the snow industry, creating a more effective means of reaching active, casual and potential ski resort consumers with a common message: educate, motivate and generate excitement in ski resort sports.

According to Ski Press and SnoCountry, the partnership will double the website's impressions/page views/unique users, reaching up to 30,000 skiers each day. In addition, SnoCountry's on-air radio reports exceed 90,000 broadcasts nationwide over the winter season, reaching an audience of more than 180 million. These assets will compliment Ski Press's U.S. distribution, which the company claims is 250,000 copies per issue. The title is distributed weekly to resorts and specialty shops throughout North America free of charge. Beginning October 1st, 2008, the websites will merge into a completely new co-branded website found at www.skipressworld.com.
