Tight Job Market Fosters Creative Hiring Practices

SAM Magazine-Park City, Utah, Aug. 26, 2008-With the H2-B visa cap reached, Park City-based Premiere Resorts, which needs a staff of approximately 500 to manage an inventory of over 2,850 units at a variety of Western resorts, has launched a web site to help recruit employees. The site, Funresortjobs.com, describes jobs that allow employees to move from one resort to another from season to season, or to stay in one location. Options include internships, snowbird programs, seasonal employment, and flexible hours.

The site makes a special effort to recruit older workers. A 60-year-old is often "a good old-fashioned, seasoned person who has learned the lessons of life and understands customer service," said Barbara Zimonja, Premiere president and CEO (and 60 herself). "It becomes more of a norm for them. An older person understands why a vacation can be stressful, and they know how to help our customers through that."

To further entice applicants, Premiere offers one free lift ticket per week, and for those who opt for a career to the hospitality business, the opportunity to advance into a management position. There's precedent for that: Zimonja worked her way up to the top job from the "pail room" (cleaning condo units). \
