Greek Peak Developing $20 Million Adventure Center

  • Push to The Latest: No
SAM Magazine-Cortland, N.Y., Mar. 9, 2011-Greek Peak Mountain Resort, NY is developing an Adventure Fun Center that's part of a $20 million expansion. The center, scheduled to open in June, includes a ropes course, zip lines, a mountain biking park, alpine coaster and tubing center.

The Wiegand alpine coaster will be 4,300 feet in length. There will be four ziplines, ranging from 300 to 1,300 feet, and two summer tubing lanes. All will be based out of a new building that's currently under construction. This new center will also be the base of operations for winter tubing as well, for which the number of lanes will double, and lighting will be added for night tubing.

The Adventure Fun Center is intended to augment the resort's recently completed Hope Lake Lodge and water park, which have not been quite as successful as anticipated, according to news reports. The indoor waterpark appeals to families with kids ages four to 13, but teens, the resort has found, want even more.

"Basically, what we need is that full family participation, or elements for the summertime. And that's where the idea for an adventure center came in," said Greek Peak president Al Kryger. "The adventure center, the ropes training course, all of those pieces are designed to help the long term occupancy of the hotel."

As part of its $20 million investment, the resort is also building a 400-guest conference center, expected to open in September, and a new quad chairlift, scheduled to open at the start of the 2011-12 season.

Funding for the expansion was secured through loans with the Tennessee Commerce Bank and a $10 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development division.
