SAM Magazine--April 15, 2011--The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found "serious" workplace violations at Wolf Creek Ski Area, Colo., following an investigation of the avalanche death of the area's patrol director.

On November 22, 2010, Scott Kay was performing avalanche control work by himself and was not wearing a helmet, both violations of state law. Kay died when he skied across the slope, instead of across the summit, and was caught and buried in an avalanche. OSHA fined Wolf Creek $7,000 and $5,000 for the respective violations. In addition, the area was fined $5,000 for lack of handrails on a metal staircase.

Wolf Creek has until May 26 to correct these issues.
