SAM Magazine—Bear Valley, Calif., Oct. 29, 2024—The California Mountain Resort Company (CMRC) has appointed new general managers to two of its ski areas: Brad Cumberland was promoted to general manager of Bear Valley, and Troy Cohee was promoted to general manager of China Peak.Brad Cumberland and Tim CoheeBrad Cumberland and Troy Cohee

“At Bear Valley, we've restructured most of our management team to put us in the position to revitalize a once iconic resort,” said CMRC president Tim Cohee. “Brad's experience in finance and mountain operations, plus his extensive ski background as well as his overall leadership demeanor, makes him the best fit for a new day in Bear Valley.”

Brad Cumberland joined Bear Valley in 2016 as the director of finance and was named director of operations in 2020. He has a background in private sector financial analysis and strategic planning. He was a competitive freestyle skier in the ‘80s and is a past treasurer of the Alberta Freestyle Ski Association.

“Our leadership team and dedicated staff are focused on adapting to the changing needs of our guests, ensuring that both locals and visitors can experience the vibrant and inviting atmosphere that makes Bear Valley a place people can deeply connect with,” said Cumberland about his focus in his new role. “By embracing the rich history of the area and acknowledging the contributions of locals who have called it home for generations, we aim to create a space that feels inclusive and welcoming to all,” he added.

At China Peak, Troy Cohee said, “I’m very excited with the new role and looking forward to being involved with the CSIA (California Ski Industry Association). I have lived and breathed the ski industry my whole life up to this point, and I plan to contribute in a big way with my time as GM at China Peak.”

Troy began his career at China Peak in 2010, the year his father, Tim Cohee, acquired the resort (Tim sold China Peak to CMRC in 2022.). Troy was a part-time employee of China Peak while studying ski business and resort management at Sierra Nevada College. He joined the resort full-time after graduating in 2018 and has held roles in snowmaking, grooming, and terrain parks. He most recently served as director of operations.

“Troy [31] is one of the youngest general managers in the nation, but he's literally spent a lifetime in skiing,” said Tim. “[He was] born on the slopes of Kirkwood in the early 1990s. He's a hands-on operator who has built a very strong mountain team and has developed into an excellent leader.”
