SAM Magazine—Oct. 30, 2020—Even with winter approaching, Americans are turning to the outdoors for safety, sanity, and entertainment, according to a Harris Poll conducted Oct. 15-17 and sponsored by the Out of Home Advertising Association. More than two-thirds of Americans say they have an increased appreciation of the outdoors since lockdowns ended.Trapp Family LodgeCross Country Skiers at Trapp Family Lodge

With many Americans working and/or learning from their home, 65 percent of Americans say they try to get out of the house as often as they can, even if it’s just for a walk—40 percent say they are walking more now than before the pandemic.

COVID lockdowns gave more than two-thirds (69 percent) of Americans an increased appreciation of the experience and awareness of their surroundings when they are outside. And 65 percent say they have been trying to find safe outdoor activities to spend their time. Nearly half say they have been trying to find new places to work from home or spend time outdoors.

Much of this interest in activity will continue into the winter. Nearly a quarter of Americans say they plan to live as normally as possible this winter; another 29 percent say they plan to find creative ways to socialize safely this winter. Just 40 percent of Americans plan to stay home and quarantine themselves much as possible during the colder months.
