SAM Magazine—Albuquerque, N.M., Feb. 6, 2025—Sandia Peak Ski Area suspended winter operations as of Tuesday, Feb. 4, citing warm temperatures and limited snow.
“Our team is actively monitoring the weather and will take every opportunity to resume snowmaking when conditions allow,” stated an update posted to the ski area’s website and social media channels.
The closure, effective immediately, comes after Sandia Peak had its earliest opening day in the ski area’s history on Nov. 9, 2024—a full 48 days before its projected opening date—thanks to 36 inches of snow. Recently, however, snowfall and snowmaking windows have been limited. The ski area has only received 44 inches of snow season-to-date, according to the online snow report.
Guests with pre-purchased lift tickets will be credited at the purchase price of their online orders. The credits, which are set to expire on April 30, 2025, can be used later in the season if the ski area reopens, or at partner resorts Sipapu and Pajarito, also located in New Mexico and owned by Mountain Capital Partners.
MCP acquired Sandia Peak in February 2024 and opened the ski area for winter operations for the first time since it spun lifts for just four weeks during the 2021-22 season. Sandia Peak didn’t open for winter 2022-23, with the previous owners citing staffing challenges and limited snowfall as the reasons to keep it closed.
After this season’s closure, MCP officials concluded their online statements with optimism. “Our commitment to providing you with the Freedom to Ski remains unchanged. Stay tuned for updates as we work to get you back on the mountain soon this season.”
