SAM Magazine—Natick, Mass., Aug. 1, 2022—Voting is now open for the second annual “Rise Up Challenge,” a video contest highlighting a few skilled, young lift mechanics who will keep ski area lifts spinning for decades to come. Rise UpThis year’s contest includes videos from six resorts, each featuring an up-and-coming mechanic from the resort’s lift maintenance team:

  • Arizona Snowbowl, Ariz.: Nicholas Gilbertson
  • Boston Mills Brandywine, Ohio: Scott Smejkal
  • Magic Mountain, Vt.: Russ Murphy
  • Whistler Blackcomb, B.C.: Kae-Lor Sitlinger
  • WinSport, Alberta: Olivia Robson
  • Winter Park, Colo.: Mel Schropp

The resort whose video receives the most votes by Aug. 12, 2022, will win a $3,500 educational grant, courtesy of sponsor Leitner-Poma of America, to help support this next generation of lift maintenance professionals. 

“This exciting second installment of the Rise Up Challenge showcases the great physical and mental challenges of a career in lift maintenance,” said Leitner-Poma of America president Daren Cole. “These candidates demonstrate the enthusiasm and professional pride of those who maintain lift systems across North America. We are excited to support the industry in celebrating the next generation of lift maintenance leaders.”
