SAM Magazine—New York City, Feb. 5, 2020—Roughly 15,000 people came out to play on the snow and ice for Winter Jam NYC, held Saturday, Feb. 1 in New York City’s Central Park. Presented by NYC Parks, the Olympic Regional Development Authority, I Love NY, and I Ski NY, the free event featured a variety of winter sports and activities for visitors to participate in and watch. Gore Mountain’s snowmaking crew brought down snow guns and spent three productive nights piling up the snow ahead of the event. It was groomed out to create a learning hill, where instructors from New York mountains gave 350 free learn-to lessons. Lesson takers were fitted with free rental equipment supplied by Windham Mountain and Pedigree Ski Shop.

Other activities and attractions included snowshoeing, sledding, curling, ice bowling, dodgeball, flag football, bobsled and snowcat photo ops, live ice carving demos, and more. Windham, Catamount, Whiteface, West Mountain, Gore, Thunder Ridge, Mt. Peter all staffed booths, providing visitors with information about coming to ski or ride at their mountains.

Many of the attendees during the four-hour event were families with younger kids. Winter Jam is an excellent example of bringing the snow to the people, and introducing the fun that can be had outside during the winter months.
