SAM Magazine—Bend, Ore., April 7, 2025—After putting Mt. Bachelor on the market in August 2024, POWDR has decided it’s going to keep the resort in its portfolio after all.
In a statement, POWDR said it considered “all facts and circumstances” in evaluating the sale of Mt. Bachelor, the fifth largest ski area in the United States by skiable acres, and “has decided to retain ownership of Mt Bachelor, indefinitely.” POWDR acquired the resort in 2001.
The statement said POWDR plans to make various improvements, such as update the power capability to the resort and finish the Advance Wood Energy facility it started in 2023, and offer a new “Kids Ski Free” program for any dependent child 12 and under that can be added onto any adult unlimited or adult Outplay regular winter season pass.
A local group called Mt. Bachelor Community Inc. made a run at putting together an offer for the resort, but ultimately wasn’t able to make a bid due to time constraints, but leaders of the grassroots effort said they still plan to pursue the acquisition, according to the Rogue Valley Times.
When the company listed Mt. Bachelor and local tour operator Sun Country Tours for sale eight months ago, it also put Eldora, Colo., and SilverStar in British Columbia on the market, listed with JP Morgan Chase. It’s still seeking bids for Eldora and SilverStar. POWDR sold Killington and Pico resorts in Vermont to a group of local investors in August 2024.
POWDR has recently diversified its business to take on concessioner contracts for lodging, food and beverage, and retail sites in Zion National Park and Death Valley National Park, which it cited as one of the reasons for selling a portion of its mountain resort portfolio.
