2016 RMLA Spring Conference and Trade Show

More than 500 lift mechanics, operations staff, managers, suppliers, and instructors attended the 45th annual Rocky Mountain Lift Association (RMLA) Spring Conference May 2-5 in Grand Junction, Colo. The theme was “Expanding Winter into Summer” but focus was clearly on lift maintenance training and winter operations. There were fewer sessions on risk management and guest service this year, and more about how to keep older lifts healthy.

2015 Toronto Snow Show

The annual Toronto Snow Show, Oct. 15-18, 2015, at the International Centre, helped kick-start the upcoming Canadian winter ski season—as well as the North American consumer show season. Featuring a mix of vendors, local retailers and 40+ resorts from across North America, thousands of consumers flooded the trade show floor looking to purchase the latest gear, the best season passes available, and unbeatable travel packages.

ISKINY-PSAA EXPO 2015

The annual ISKINY-PSAA Expo Sept. 21-23, 2015, at Lake Placid, N.Y., attracted more than 370 ski resort, vendor, and guest attendees from across North America. Two major themes dominated the gathering: the guest experience and risk management.

Before diving into business, though, the fun kicked off with a tour of the operational areas at Whiteface Resort, followed by a friendly golf tournament.

Northeast Ski Areas Gather at Attitash for the NE Summit

The near-record turnout at this year's New England Summit Sept. 15-17 showed how much excitement there is in the region as resorts anticipate what El Nino will bring—including the possibility the Northeast is looking at another record-breaking snowfall year. Show organizer Bo Bigelow of the Ski Maine Association said the Summit drew 290 ski area attendees and an overall total attendance of 452 including exhibitors and speakers. Sessions were well attended, and the trade show hall was standing room only. 

Summer Ops Camp 2015

The continued growth in summer resort operations lured more than 160 attendees representing 50 resorts, along with 34 vendor partners, from across North America to SAM’s 6th annual Summer Ops Camp at Camelback Resort, Pa., Sept. 9-11. The three-day conference addressed several aspects of “The Serious Business of Summer Fun” and provided several opportunities to demo a variety of summer activities and different ways to program them.

SAVMI: World€™s Best Independent Snowcat Mechanics Program?

OK, that’s a trick question. SAVMI, the Ski Area Vehicle Mechanics Institute, is likely the only such program anywhere. Where else can groomer mechanics learn about Tier 4 mechanics, oil analysis, tire and track maintenance, plus electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting? And that’s why its 30th annual Conference and Trade show drew 312 attendees, including more than 200 resort personnel from 49 resorts (comprising 13 states and three countries) and representatives from 47 supplier companies to the Two Rivers Convention Center in Grand Junction, Colo., May 18-21.

2015 NSAA National Convention and Tradeshow

NSAA’s National Convention and Tradeshow in San Francisco at the Hilton San Francisco May 2-6 drew the usual crowd. But there was a greater sense of urgency than usual, as the prolonged drought in California and extreme snow and cold in the East depressed visits last season. A slew of other issues kept attendees focused on business issues.

The World'€™s Fair of Winter Sports: Interalpin 2015

Approximately 23,000 winter resort professionals descended on Messe Innsbruck, Austria, April 15-17 for the annual Interalpin trade show. Attendees came from nearly 80 countries, from major markets such as the U.S., France, and Switzerland to emerging markets such as Kazakhstan, China, and Argentina. More than 60 percent of the visitors came from outside of Europe, indicating the show’s international appeal.

NSAA 2015 Winter Conference - Snowbird, UT

On Feb. 10-12, more than 400 ski area attendees representing 87 areas gathered at Snowbird, Utah, where 105 exhibitors filled the show floor. Attendees had a variety of educational sessions to choose from as presenters tackled everything from drone technology, freestyle terrain resource updates, minimum wage exemptions and the future of electronic incident reporting. Snowbird itself received close to six inches of snow during the conference, which many attendees took full advantage of during first tracks on Wednesday and Thursday. 

SANY/PSAA Conference 2014

From September 22-24, 2014, Hunter Mountain, N.Y., hosted the annual SANY/PSAA meeting. It was a record-breaker in many regards. Overall, there were over 400 attendees, 237 of whom came from 52 ski areas from New York, Pennsylvania and beyond. Over 76 companies were on hand to showcase their products. The highlight of the show was the final gala dinner, which called for attendees to come dressed in their best Woodstock outfits. Many obliged, creating a throwback event complete with daisies, tie-dye and funky glasses.

New England Summit 2014

From September 16-18, 2014, over 250 people from 65 resorts gathered at Attitash, N.H., for three days of shopping, networking and learning at the New England Summit. There were 72 exhibitors in the packed trade show hall, giving attendees plenty to peruse. When not in the trade show hall, attendees had dozens of sessions to choose from, covering everything from snowmaking to marketing and rental to risk management. On the final evening, conference goers were treated to a spectacular fireworks display by Atlas PyroVision, followed by a dinner at Bear Peak base lodge.

Summer Ops Camp 2014

With interest in summer business continuing to grow, it’s no surprise that this year’s Summer Ops Camp, held at Vail, Colo., Sept. 3-5, drew a record attendance of 150 from both resorts (46) and suppliers (34). Campers from North America, Chile, and China participated in range of business, activity-specific, and risk management seminars and discussions, and got hands-on with activities at Vail’s Adventure Ridge, Glenwood Caverns, Breckenridge Fun Park, and at the suppliers’ demo area in Vail Village.

Midwest Ski Areas Association Trade Show 2014

From August 3-6, over 290 ski area attendees representing 55 ski areas gathered at Boyne Mountain in Michigan for three days of shopping, networking and learning. Over 76 companies displayed their wares providing attendees a one-stop shop for the coming season. Boyne supplied attendees with abundant sunshine, great food and a beautiful resort packed with every amenity a guest could want, from an indoor waterpark to a golf course, and from biking to zip lining. Indoors, attendees had the choice of dozens of information-packed sessions, addressing everything from lift maintenance to marketing.

Cutter's Camp in the East and West Explore Everything Terrain Park

Cutter's Camp at Timberline, Mt. Hood, wrapped up last week, May 12-16, and celebrated its 12th year for this gathering. The shorter eastern Cutter's Camp took place last month, April 4-6, at Mount Snow, Vt. Between the two camps, over 85 resorts from across the continent (and a few from overseas) gathered with one thing in common—a passion to ensure that resorts both big and small run safe and successful parks.

Leitner Poma High Roller Grand Opening

On a glorious evening in Las Vegas, Nev., on May 18, Leitner-Poma hosted an event to celebrate its installation of the world's tallest observation wheel, the High Roller. Attendees included representatives from Leitner-Poma, Sigma, Aspen/Snowmass, Grouse Mountain, Mt. Hood Meadows, Arapahoe Basin, Val Badia and many other parties involved in the construction of the project. The 550-foot wheel proved to be an impressive back-drop for an opening cocktail reception. And right at sunset, attendees were treated to a 30-minute ride on the wheel.

43rd RMLA Conference, May 2014—Lift Safety Ideas, Summer Activity Concerns and More

The annual Rocky Mountain Lift Association (RMLA) conference May 5-8 in Grand Junction, Colo., expanded the usual safety and risk-management themes to year-round activities—a trend that has spanned several conferences this season. That, along with the many training sessions and several “does this happen at your area?” roundtables, drew a typical crowd of 315 attendees, along with another 111 speakers and suppliers.

NSAA 2014 National Convention and Trade Show

The annual NSAA Convention, held in Savannah, Ga., April 29-May 2, drew an enthusiastic crowd. The convention provided an upbeat conclusion to a season that started slowly but rebounded strongly. Over 120 resorts were in attendance to cruise the trade show aisles, which hosted 150 companies. In all, 867 people had the chance to network, learn and recreate.

2014 CONVERSION CAMP WRAP UP

For the past decade, the mountain resort industry has circled around the trial and conversion quandary: How do we get more than 15 percent of those who try our sports to stick with them? The first annual Conversion Camp, Mar. 4-6 at Jiminy Peak, Mass., provided some answers. Resorts from across the continent gathered together to share ideas and programs that have moved the conversion needle considerably. 2014 NSAA Winter Conference - Steamboat, CO

From January 21-23, almost 800 people gathered at Steamboat, Colorado, for the National Ski Areas Association Western Conference and Trade Show. With 84 ski areas on hand, the 147 exhibiting companies had no shortage of potential customers. And ski area attendees had a wide variety of educational sessions to choose from as presenters tackled everything from marijuana use at ski areas to wildfire management. Of note was a presentation by Nate Fristoe of RRC Associates who predicted that the 2013-14 skier visit numbers will struggle to reach 53 million thanks to poor snow on the West Coast.

2013 Summer Ops Camp Wrap-Up

In its fourth year, the SAM Summer Ops Camp drew over 150 operators and vendors together at Attitash Resort, N.H., from September 15-18 to discuss the many money-making opportunities to be had outside of the snowy months. From aerial adventure parks to mining and from water features to mud races, operators from approximately 35 resorts from across the country left with a slew of new ideas and best practices from vendors and from each other.

2013 New England Summit

The 2013 New England Summit Sept. 17-19 at Attitash, N.H., drew 425 attendees, including more than 275 ski area staff from 51 areas. There were also eight industry organizations represented, and 150 exhibitors.

Ski Areas of NY & Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association Expo 2013

From September 11 to 13, 2013, 326 attendees from 66 supplier companies and 36 ski resorts gathered at beautiful Holiday Valley for a few days of networking and shopping during the Ski Areas of NY (SANY) and Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association (PSAA) annual Expo. Attendees took advantage of more than 30 sessions covering everything from risk management to social media and cruised the trade show hall for new ideas from vendors. It was all capped off by a fantastic fireworks display from Young Explosives. Check out the full gallery of pictures here.

MSAA Trade Show 2013

From August 4-7, 401attendees representing 54 ski areas and 71 suppliers, convened at Alpine Valley Resort, Wisc., for three days of networking, learning, shopping, eating, and duckie races. Check out the photo gallery below.

KATV Opens New Corporate Office, Service Facility

PistenBully parent company Kassbohrer All Terrain Vehicles (KATV) hosted a crowd of 150 resort customers, local businesses, and staff at the grand opening of its new office and warehouse facility in Reno, Nev., July 24. KATV had invited many customers to join a multi-day celebration that included a tour of Lake Tahoe on the M.S. Dixie paddleboat and a reception, ribbon-cutting, and tour of the new facility itself.

Cutter's Camp 2013 Wrap-Up

SAM Magazine--May 22, 2013--Timberline, Mt. Hood--Last week over 80 campers and panelists gathered at Timberline Lodge, Ore., for SAM Magazine's 11th annual Cutter's Camp--a hands-on education and networking event that gathers like-minded individuals who all share a passion for the progression of freestyle terrain. This was the western installment of the camp (the East was held last month at Carinthia, Mount Snow). Together, the camps drew over 130 resorts from North America and some overseas.

Ski Area Vehicle Maintenance Institute 2013

The annual Ski Area Vehicle Maintenance Institute in Grand Junction, Colo., May 13-16 drew nearly 300 attendees. In addition to several workshops dedicated to Prinoth and PistenBully equipment, there were several sessions related to the impacts of the coming Tier 4 implementation—and to compressed natural gas, one alternative to Tier 4 diesel issues. Welding, safety, snow removal, and a wide range of management seminars also filled the schedule.

2013 NSAA National Trade Show Wrap-Up & SAMMY Awards

From April 30 to May 3, 2013, the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) held its annual trade show and convention in Palm Springs, Calif. The mood was upbeat, especially given the 11-percent increase in skier and snowboarder visits over last season, allowing all 900 attendees to breathe a sigh of relief. SAM's annual SAMMY Awards were also given out to four deserving recipients: Ryan Bell, Ross Boisvert, Rob McSkimming and Justin Rowland.

Interalpin Show 2013

From April 10-13, 2013, over 20,000 gathered in Innsbruck for the Interalpin show. The mood was upbeat as everyone celebrated a great winter in Europe. Check out our photo gallery below. 

NSAA Eastern Trade Show 2013

A few days before the epic blizzard of 2013 hit New England, the NSAA Eastern Trade Show and Conference took place at Mount Snow, Vt., from February 4-6. In all, 72 ski areas were represented by 351 ski area attendees who were able to shop at 120 supplier booths. We just wish the snow had arrived before the show!

SIA 2013

SAM Magazine—Denver, Feb. 5, 2013—Nearly 19,000 attendees representing 80 percent of the buying power in the snowsports industry descended on the Colorado Convention Center from January 31-February 3. More than 900 brands showcased their latest innovations and hottest products for the 2013-14. Attendees packed up and headed to to the On-Snow Demo Feb. 4-5, hosted in conjunction with the Western Winter Sports Reps Association's Rocky Mountain Demo and in partnership with the Cross Country Ski Areas Association at Winter Park and the Nordic Demo at Devil's Thumb Ranch.

NSAA Western Trade Show 2013

NSAA's western trade show and conference, held at Snowbird in Utah from January 22-24, 2013, had a total of 731 attendees who networked, shopped and enjoyed the Utah Slopes. Of the 731 total, 374 were ski area attendees representing 78 ski areas and 357 supplier attendees representing 136 companies.

New England Ski Museum’s Spirit of Skiing Award

Bernie Weichsel, Producer of the BEWI ski and snowboard expos and the BEWI Award, received the New England Ski Museum’s Spirit of Skiing award in recognition of his influence in popularizing the sport. It was presented at the ski museum’s 35th Annual Meeting and Dinner at Wachusett Mountain Resort, MA on Nov. 17.

Wachusett Celebrates 50 Years

SAM Magazine visited Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA on December 15 to help celebrate Wachusett's 50th anniversary. The event was in conjunction with the Eastern Ski Writers Association.

IAAPA Attractions Expo 2012

Grab at look at SAM's photos from the IAAPA Attractions Expo 2012, where new products were on display and where future trends are emerging. Many of these trends and products play to the inherent strengths of mountain resorts: nature, active rather than passive customers, and the family experience. They will also require new ways of understanding customer service. One thing is for sure, though -- it pays to know what the competition is up to and how we can fit into the year-round recreation scene.

Vail Gondola Construction Tour

Vail Village Gondola on Schedule for Nov. 16 Opening

Vail is replacing the venerable Vista Bahn Express with a new 10-passenger Leitner-Poma gondola that will be the first and fastest of its kind in North America. The new lift travels up to 1,230 feet per minute and has an hourly capacity of 3,600, an increase of 40 percent. The cabins offer heated seats, and riders will have wi-fi access for the duration of the 7.5-minute trip.

Gravity Logic Forum 2012

From September 25-27, 2012, Gravity Logic hosted its annual forum in Whistler, B.C. With over 30 ski area attendees, the forum was packed with great presentations covering everything from marketing to risk management...and of course great riding. Whistler supplied three sunny days that allowed attendees to check out arguably one of the world’s best downhill bike parks.

SANY/PSAA Expo and New England Summit

During September, two trade shows took place in the Northeast and here is a brief overview, plus lots of great pictures.

First up was the New England Summit, held at Sunday River Ski Resort, Maine, where 218 ski area personnel from 53 resorts across New England and eastern Canada gathered together.

Summer Ops Camp 2012

The SAM Summer Ops Camp, based at Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah Sept. 4-6, paired site visits to Park City, Canyons, and the Utah Olympic Park with a varied schedule of indoor sessions at Canyons on the business aspects of summer operations. Topics ranged from complementary marketing and activity development among neighboring resorts to examinations of specific types of activities, from ziplines and aerial parks to water decks.

Stars Come Out for Woodward Tahoe Opening

SAM Magazine—Boreal, Calif., June 11, 2012—BMX pro Nate Wessel bunny hopped his bike over the striped tape, cutting it on the way down, to kick off the grand opening of Woodward Tahoe on Saturday, June 9.

2012 NSAA TRADE SHOW AND SAMMY AWARDS

The 15th annual SAMMY Leadership Awards were presented during the 2012 NSAA National Trade Show in San Antonio, TX on May 7. Congratulations to Matt Skinner, Jody Churich and Peter Sonntag.

SIERRA AT TAHOE DEBUTS YODA'S RIGLET PARK

Partnering with Burton Snowboards and Lucasfilm, Sierra at Tahoe this season has opened Yoda's Riglet Park, a miniature progression park for 3- to 6-year-olds. The park helps kids learn the ways of the Force, and snowboarding, through interactive learning nodes, or staging areas, that showcase custom-made wood carvings of Chewbacca, Jar Jar Binks, Yoda and others.

NSAA Eastern Conference Wrap-Up 2012

From February 7-8, 2012, the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) held its Eastern Trade Show and Conference at Killington, Vt. Thanks to great snowmaking, Killington provided some great runs for attendees, while NSAA kept them busy indoors with informative sessions and great networking opportunities during trade show hours.

2012 SIA Snow Show

The 2012 SIA Snow Show, which was held January 26-29 at the Denver Convention Center, showcased more than 900 brands. Over 19,000 attendees—an increase of nearly 1,000 from the previous year, despite a falloff in retail sales in the past few months—reviewed the latest and greatest trends in hardgoods, softgoods and accessories. Following the Denver show, a few thousand enthusiasts demoed skis, snowboards, boots, and accessories from 115 brands at Winter Park and Devil's Thumb Ranch January 30 and 31.

2012 NSAA Western Conference

From January 17-19, ski areas and suppliers alike descended on Squaw Valley, Calif., for the NSAA Western Conference and Trade Show. Understandably, the number of attendees was off by about 150 over previous years, but that didn't stop those who did attend from taking part in informative sessions and a little trade show shopping. Sixty-two resorts were represented by 221 attendees and 115 supplier companies were showcased.
